NRCPD Newsletter | April 2015

30 April 2015

Dear colleague

It's been five months since I joined NRCPD and I'm getting my teeth into my first CPD audit. Registrants randomly chosen to take part have received an email asking them to submit their portfolio. If you want to know more about what the audit is and why we do it, you can download our CPD handbook.

I can confirm that fees for 2015-16 will remain the same as last year. And remember, if you want to appear on more than one Register we will only charge you one fee if you submit the applications at the same time.

We continue to work with government and others to increase public protection by making sure only NRCPD Registrants are used by public services. NRCPD registration is increasingly considered to be the mark of quality, the result of years of work by deaf and deafblind people, communication and language professionals, and lay people who have supported NRCPD.

If you have questions about anything in this newsletter, please don't hesitate to contact us. You can also follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page.

Kind regards

Kate Price

Registration Service Manager

NHS England

We continue to work with NHS England as it develops a quality standard for interpreting and translation services. It will be available for comment from mid-May, when they will hold several events. And the NHS England accessible information standard will be published over the summer.

Framework agreements

Framework agreements are contracts that public services like the NHS use to buy the services they need. When those services are translation and interpretation, we make sure they include standards that protect the public.

Statement on the creation of RBSLI

RBSLI, a self regulatory organisation, was set up on 20 April by some members of the sign language interpreting profession. Our chair, Huw Vaughan Thomas, made a statement.

We then wrote to RBSLI requesting a meeting. We have published our letter and the response.

For registrants

Trainee Sign Language Interpreters

Following improvements to our Registrant portal, applications to become a Trainee Sign Language Interpreter (TSLI) status or to supervise a trainee are now made online. Guidance for TSLIs, endorsers and supervisors is available on the website, but please contact us if you have any questions.

Association of Sign Language Interpreters

One of the primary aims of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI) is to encourage good practice. ASLI does this by offering support, services and guidance to enable interpreters to develop in their practice. It provides its members with guidance on best practice, news of the latest developments, CPD courses, free mentoring and local support through its regional groups.

NRCPD supports the work of ASLI because it helps its members become better at what they do, which increases public protection. We therefore encourage all Registered Sign Language Interpreters to find out more about the benefits of ASLI membership.
