Using the NRCPD website

We've tried to make our website as easy as possible to navigate and use regardless of your browser. However there are a few things that you can do to improve or make your browsing experience more comfortable. We've rounded these up below.

Use a Modern Internet Browser

The internet has come a long way since the release of the early browsers and it is important to keep your software up to date. Older browsers lack support and crucial features that web developers rely upon to continue developing innovate and exciting pages. Older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer pose a number of problems due to their incorrect rendering of pages.

PC users have a number of options. Microsoft has continued to develop its Internet Explorer browser. It has undergone significant improvement in recent years. Alternatively Mozilla Firefox is an excellent alternative. This popular web browser has gained an increasingly large market share and offers some exciting features which can improve your surfing experience. Opera is also another good alternative.

All three are continually revised and developed. Our website is compatible with older browsers but the best experience will be had from one of the modern browsers available for download.

Update and Install Adobe Flash

Our website makes use of Adobe flash for BSL video content. Unlike other methods of playing videos flash is smaller, quicker to download and can be used on different devices. If you are having problems playing our videos ensure that you have the latest version of flash installed by clicking here. We rarely uses flash for anything else on our website. When it does you'll be sure to find an alternative text version of that content.

Setting Your Text Size

All the text used on our website are flexible and can be scaled easily. Different web browsers have different methods for increasing text sizes. On Internet Explorer you change your text size by clicking 'View' in the menu and then selecting 'Text Size'. In Firefox users select 'View' from the menu and then 'Zoom'. This can be used to make the text bigger and more comfortable to read.

Sitemap

Our website comes complete with a sitemap to help you locate our most important pages. You can visit this by clicking here. This is continually updated whenever new menu items are added to our site.

Access Keys

Our website does not make use of access keys. They can often cause problems with different browsers and computers. Many of the people who should benefit from access keys use devices with their computer, for example: users of screen readers or text only browsers. These devices often have a multitude of keyboard commands, including some that use the Alt key. Using access keys could override or clash with important functions in a browser. Because of all this it makes access keys difficult to implement effectively.

The UK government has tried to set a standard list of access keys for websites however these do not go far enough. These are aimed at government websites and whilst they may work some it is almost impossible to create a universal list of access keys for every UK website, let alone every website in the world. With all this in mind our website does not use access keys.
