NRCPD Newsletter | March 2016

01 April 2016

Dear colleague

At the end of last year we told you we were in negotiation with Signature about our governance arrangements. Both Boards agreed NRCPD should have greater independence.

We hoped to have been able to tell you more by now, but the details are still being discussed. We are sure you understand the importance of making the right decision, and appreciate your patience.

If you have questions about anything in this newsletter, please don't hesitate to contact us. You can also follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page.

Kind regards

Kate Price

Routes to registration

We have been concerned for some time about a lack of routes to registration for interpreters for deafblind people, lipspeakers, notetakers and speech to text reporters.

We are therefore pleased that Signature has asked us to approve a new deafblind qualification, and iBSL have asked us to approve their deafblind qualification. We are currently mapping them against the standards.

We have written to Registered Notetakers who hold a level 2 qualification to inform them of funded training being offered by Signature. Successful completion will mean their skills have been assessed at level 3. We will therefore be altering our registration requirements for notetakers from 1 January 2017.

Signature has indicated it is developing a course for speech to text reporters. We will map this to see if it meets the standards to be a route to registration. As they also now offer a Level 3 Certificate in Lipspeaking, we are pleased there will soon be available routes to registration for all these professions.

We are keen to add more routes, but to approve a course we need to be asked by the awarding body. If there are courses available that you think could be a route to registration, please contact us.

Conferences

We will be making a presentation at Critical Link 8 in June about the future relationship between sign language interpreters and those who rely on their services. Registration is open for this conference that will focus on future-proofing interpreting and translating.

We will also be at the ASLI conference in October. Our chair, Sandra Verkuyten OBE, will talk about the role of statutory regulation in enhancing public protection and professional recognition. You can register now.
