Why has NRCPD changed the requirement from enhanced DBS to standard DBS?

We received a number of queries from registrants about the enhanced disclosure. We were advised that the DBS were refusing to provide the enhanced disclosure to Registrants and trainees. We contacted the DBS who confirmed that we were in error to request enhanced disclosure; and that standard disclosure is appropriate.

My current DBS is enhanced and less than 3 years old. Do I need to apply for a standard disclosure now?

No, if your current DBS is still valid (i.e. less than 3 years old) then you can keep it. Once it's due for renewal, you can then apply for the standard disclosure.

I have subscribed to the DBS update service. Is this still acceptable?

Yes.

My check is from Disclosure Scotland or Access NI, does this apply to me?

Yes the requirement for a standard check also applies to Disclosure Scotland and access NI.

I think my professional practice means I meet the requirements for enhanced disclosure. What should I do?

If you believe that your professional practice means you meet the current legislation's requirements for enhanced disclosure you should check with the DBS. It is your responsibility to seek enhanced disclosure if you believe this is necessary to ensure you are legally compliant. The following link may be useful:

Will a change in circumstances effect my subscription to the DBS update service?

If you are subscribed to the update service with an enhanced DBS check and want to apply for the standard DBS check, you will need to make an application for a new paper certificate due to the change in circumstances. The DBS have advised that you can then add further certificates to your subscription.
